Fronius MicroGrid & Backup Solution

Off-grid, stable power supply with solar energy

MicroGrids are often formed in regions with an insufficient power supply. MicroGrids either function completely without grid connection as a regional, self-contained grid or serve as a grid-connected backup system. Diesel generators are often used to maintain the energy supply. However, the majority of MicroGrid & backup systems rely on solar energy as a stable, inexpensive and sustainable source of energy.

The advantages of a Fronius MicroGrid & backup solution

  • Highly reliable supply
  • Stable energy costs
  • Proven system with minimum service requirements
  • MicroGrid setup integrated in the inverters

How the Fronius MicroGrid & backup solution works

Fronius inverters have a special MicroGrid setup to ensure stable MicroGrid operation. The inverter provides the MicroGrid with as much PV energy as possible. If the load is less than the maximum capacity of the PV generator and if the batteries are already full (or the charging power of the inverter charger is too low), automatic PV power reduction will be required. Most of the time, the output of the inverter is controlled without communication. In this case, the frequency droop characteristic of the inverter charger and the Fronius inverter ensure optimum power setpoints.

With an inverter charger from Victron Energy (Victron MultiPlus, Victron Quattro), the Fronius MicroGrid setup can be used without further configuration on the Fronius inverter.

PV generator The sun’s energy is absorbed by the solar modules in the form of direct current.

Fronius inverter The inverter converts the direct current into the alternating current used as standard in the home and supplies the MicroGrid with as much PV energy as possible.
2
Inverter-charger The current produced in the inverter can be saved in the battery using the inverter chargers.
3

Inexpensive and reliable power supply with solar energy

The MicroGrid system functions as a stand-alone island without any grid affiliation or as a back-up solution to maintain the power supply in the event of grid failures. In the event of a power failure, the system automatically decouples itself from the grid and creates its own, self-contained network (MicroGrid).

These systems make a diesel generator redundant. Using solar energy rather than a diesel system, system owners benefit not only from lower costs but also from the lack of noise and unpleasant odors. This is especially important for hotels & resorts where MicroGrids are often used.

Stable energy costs

Generating electricity with solar energy results in stable energy costs over the entire lifetime of the system. Compared to alternative energy sources, such as a diesel generator, there are no running costs.

Intelligent technology

Fronius inverters have a special, integrated MicroGrid setup which ensures stable operation of the system. The electricity generated by the PV system is temporarily stored in a battery by a inverter charger. The system is particularly flexible and can optimally adapt the interaction between the photovoltaic system and the inverter charger to the MicroGrid system. The Fronius SnapINverters are the first choice for the MicroGrid & backup system. Depending on the system size, you can use either a Fronius Symo or a Fronius Eco.

Strong partners for a reliable power supply

A reliable, stable power supply is of utmost importance to system owners. Fronius helps you, the installer, to achieve this with well thought-out solutions and strong partners. Fronius has been successfully implementing MicroGrid & backup projects with companies such as Victron Energy and Selectronic for many years. The Fronius MicroGrid & backup solution is a tried-and-tested solution that needs almost no servicing.

The MicroGrid solution in action

Fish farm in Mali

Five tonnes of fish a day are produced by the Complex Agro Industrial de Baragnouma fish farm in Mali. One of the biggest challenges is maintaining a continuous power supply for the water treatment plant. In order to ensure a stable power supply, the company decided back in 2014 to cover as much of its needs as possible with photovoltaic energy.

With the solar system providing 98% of the firm’s energy requirements, only 2% is provided by backup diesel generators.
